A Cameraman is responsible for operating the camera and capturing high-quality footage during film, television, or other video productions.

Important skills for a Cameraman include proficiency in camera operation, knowledge of lighting techniques, attention to detail, and the ability to work well under pressure.

Cameramen typically use professional cameras, lenses, tripods, and other accessories to capture footage. They may also work with lighting equipment and audio devices.

Cameramen and Lighting Cameramen often collaborate closely to achieve the desired look and feel of a shot. Lighting Cameramen focus on setting up and controlling the lighting for a scene.

While a Cameraman focuses on operating the camera and capturing footage, a Director of Photography (DP) is responsible for creating the visual aesthetic of a production. DPs oversee camera work, lighting design, and shot composition.

Before a shoot, a Cameraman may conduct equipment checks, scout locations, collaborate with the director or DP on shot lists, and review scripts to understand the visual requirements of the project.

Cameramen may start as camera assistants or operators before advancing to lead cameraman roles. Some may specialize in specific genres such as documentaries, sports broadcasting, or feature films.
